  Bob is new!

Posted by Doug
11:05 AM, August 30, 2007

tekkenbob.jpg'Tekken 6' is releasing later this year on the PS3; and like all 'Tekken' titles we can expect some unusual fighters to join the mix.

In the last few days the message boards are buzzing about one of the recently revealed new characters: a chunky dude named Bob.

At first I thought, "yeah, OK...," but after diving in to some fan-boy message boards I've learned that Bob seems to be causing a minor firestorm of controversy. Some find Bob offensive.

Here's the text describing Bob from a Japanese magazine:

Known as a martial arts genius, with his toned body and handsome face he was very popular. However when he was unable to beat opponents who were larger than he was, Bob became determined to engineer his body to increase power and weight while maintaining speed. For this reason, Bob disappears from the fighting world.

A few years later after completing his body engineering… Everyone around him is shocked at his appearance! Although people are not taking Bob seriously anymore, he is confident about his new found strength. To test his new found power he enters The King of Iron Fist Tournament 6.

I think the gaming community hub-bub is kinda humorous and much-ado-about-nothing. Certainly 'Tekken' characters of the past are just as unusual... I mean, c'mon, former incarnations brought us a log and panda.

'Home' beta reports spill the beans.

Posted by Doug
1:40 PM, August 29, 2007

I've been beta testing the PS3's 'Home' project since earlier this year.

I was afraid to say too much since I know there are non-disclosure agreements to most closed betas. I'm not sure if I read the agreement that close.

Thanks to IGN.com, someone has let the cat out of the bag, so now I don't have to.

Here are the juicy details.

It's pretty much right on the money.

What 'Halo 3' beta? 'Call of Duty 4' beta is the best beta this year!

cod4beta.jpgOK, if you haven't heard, everyone that signed up for a 'Call of Duty ' beta token, a little over 24 hours ago, will get one. There's just no guarantee WHEN you will get one.

I got mine, last night... about 2 hours after the lottery drawings supposedly started.

Following the quickest Xbox Live download I've ever experienced (about 10 minutes) I jumped right into the game. Unlike Marc, I experienced absolutely no lag. This game is insanely fast online: 60 frames per second, super-speedy load times and near-instant respawns. It's enough to make your head spin... for hours.

It terms of action and fun, I choose 'Call of Duty 4's' beta goodness over the 'Halo 3' beta any day. I was laughing and screaming at the TV well into the wee hours of the night. It's so much fun!

This game is gonna cause some divorces.

Haha, my wife is tired of me playing this day in and day out. Hopefully it will get boring soon for mine and her sake.

Cyberathlete Professional League unveiling new game at tournament in Dallas this week

SeverityCharacter.jpg

My column this past weekend included a preview of the CPL event going on in Dallas this Thursday through Sunday.

Part of the festivities at the CPL event will include the first official preview of a game called Severity, which is being developed by Dallas outfit Escalation Studios for the CPL.

Basically, it's an FPS built solely for use in professional tournaments.

Tom Mustaine, co-founder of Escalation Studios, sent me some concept art recently for Severity, which you can see at the top of this post. Check it out, and head out to the CPL this week for a more extensive look at the new game.

Im defiantly gonna check it out this weekend. for some reason i want to see console ports for the game also.

Chris has pointed out that this afternoon's massive failure of the 'CoD4' beta sign-up process is being rectified.

According to the developer's website (here), EVERYONE will have a chance to sign-up in the next 24 hours. The tokens will be divvied-out, lotto style, after this initial sign-up.

I guess that's kind of cool. But I'm sure I'll lose out on that too.

By the way, the site's still down.

They must have planned the beta signup process during break.

COD 4: Modern Warfare MP Beta - First Thoughts

Posted by Marc Kravitz
4:06 PM, August 25, 2007

I was lucky enough to get a code to join the Beta fun early. Clearly so were a lot of others. But, I am very upset with this game! Why? It has completely taken over my life this weekend. Every spare moment has been spent jumping on Live for some incredible First Person Multiplayer goodness. Those that were wowed by the video from E3 should know that the game's graphics deliver and then some! And this is a Beta! While there has been a few clipping issues and some lag here and there, the game play is fast, furious and fun! Teamwork is the best bet, but as usual there are plenty of folks who just go solo and want to rack up the kills.

One of my favorite features are the challenges during play. Meet certain criteria, like head shots or 3 kill streak during a match and you will unlock various parts or upgrades that you can use to customize your load out. Items like Red Dot Sight or radar come in real handy. You'll even gain the ability to call in air strikes and support from above. My favorite is the Last Stand. Upon being shot and left for dead you can draw you handgun during your last few dying breaths and try to do as much damage as possible.

While only a few maps and matches are available it appears the game will provide all the prerequisite modes we expect. Team Deathmatch, Capture the Flag and Search and Destroy and of course a free for all.

No single player campaigns are part of this demo, but if the multiplayer is any indication of what's to come, then COD 4 is set to be king of the hill for military shooters this fall.

I am going to pull some actual game play video and will post later this week.

Comments

I was also lucky enough to get in early and I'm right there with you. I looked up at the clock Friday night and was shocked to see that it was almost 3 A.M. Now I'm at work with tired, burning eyes, desperately in need of a nap, but all I can think of is when I'll get to play again.

Manhunt 2 is coming out after all.

Posted by Victor Godinez
5:19 PM, August 24, 2007

Miracle of miracles!

The heroes at Take-Two have magically managed to alter Manhunt 2 just enough to garner a Mature rating (while still preserving their artistic integrity, of course) and the tear-a-man-apart-with-pliers game is coming out on the PS2, PSP and Wii on October 31st.

That's Halloween, of course, but April Fool's Day might have been more appropriate.

Take-Two has been playing everyone for suckers ever since the controversy over this title erupted, and I have no doubt that the plan all along was to generate a ton of the hype with the preliminary AO rating, trim just enough gore to get an M, and then triumphantly release this "powerful piece of interactive story telling" to the gaming public.

I'm sure it will be a masterpiece.

Random thoughts for the day: 'Skate,' pick-ups, Wired and questions.

Posted by Doug
11:14 AM, August 21, 2007

Here's what's clouding my mind today:

• I woke up early to play the demo of 'Skate' on my 360. The download froze at 85% for 20 minutes. I didn't get to play.

• 'Bioshock' in now available at your local gaming retailer. I'm getting my collectors edition today!

• The new issue of Wired magazine has a cover story about 'Halo 3.' The cover image features Master Chief and some hidden secrets. There's an IP address cleverly placed in the image; it leads to a website that's part of the 'Halo 3' ARG. There's also a phone number near Chiefy's leg. Calling it reveals an advertisement for some telecom service. In the background you can hear other voices... I couldn't make them out, but I'm sure it's part of the ARG.

• My friend in Chicago bought a PS3 this weekend. He went crazy over the Blu-Ray player's HD quality. Then he asked me, "what are some good games for the PS3 that aren't already on the 360?" I actually had to think about it. I recommended 'Resistance' and 'MotorStorm' and I couldn't think of any others. Seriously, it's almost been a year, what are the great PS3 games so far? Outside of 'Ratchet and Clank' (which looks spectacular), what do we have to look forward to, exclusively, on our PS3's this year? Feel free to tell me.

• Paramount drops Blu-Ray in favor of HD-DVD. Wha?

• The PS3 'home' beta hasn't been exciting lately. Hoping for a update soon.

• Two new original games are coming out on Xbox Live tomorrow. One's called 'Space Giraffe'. Really.

BIO COVER.jpg

I have spent the last few hours playing a reviewable copy of BIOSHOCK and let me tell you...this game is fantastic. First off, screen grabs dont do the title justice. This game is amazing looking. The water effects alone were enough to make me reach for a towel! This is definitely a thinking man's shooter though. Running and gunning almost always amounts to a quick death. The environments and overall atmosphere of the game is downright spooky while at the same time you'll find yourself slackjawed with the level of detail. Rest assured I'll be playing this game all weekend and will have a full review for you next week on Texas Gamer and will also post here!

  Size matters

Posted by Victor Godinez
3:51 PM, August 13, 2007

So Microsoft is still forbidding developers from making Xbox Live Arcade titles any bigger than 150 megabytes, according to a story up now at 1up.com.

"It [the 150MB cap] really lets you focus on the innovation," said Katie Stone, senior games program manager and founding member of XBL Arcade.

That's great and all, but why then are Xbox 360 demos regularly allowed to balloon to one gigabyte or more?

I'd bet that the newly released BioShock demo ends up being downloaded more often than just about any Arcade title not named Geometry Wars, and that sucker clocks in at around 1.4 gigs.

If I had to guess why Microsoft continues to squeeze the XBLA titles, I'd say it's probably because those are revenue-generators, and so the company wants to make sure that even gamers who only have Core systems and a memory card, rather than a hard drive, can buy and download. Plus, smaller file sizes minimize the cost of the bandwidth needed to deliver the games as digital downloads.

But the demos are free -- for now, anyway -- and Microsoft doesn't really care if hard drive-less owners are shut out, since the demos aren't generating any revenue.

Where are the 65nm chips, Microsoft?

Posted by Victor Godinez
11:24 AM, August 13, 2007

Here's my column that ran in the paper this weekend.

My top item was the arrival of the HDMI-equipped 360 Premiums. I said that I thought it was likely that the new consoles also included the smaller, more reliable 65 nanometer chips that are expected to eliminate the red ring problem.

Well, a commenter over at NeoGaf dissected their new HDMI Premium this weekend, and found that the new consoles apparently do not contain the upgraded chips.

This is, in the words of The Dude, a bummer.

However, the new units do apparently include upgraded heat sinks originally found only on the Elite 360s to bleed away some of the infernal temperatures emanating from the chip.

Which I guess is better than nothing.

Sorta.

Apparently the 360 game runs at 60fps and the PS3 version at 30fps.

There's even a comparison video; pay attention the slow motion footage at the end... you can really see the difference:

  Rainbow Six Vegas kicks butt!

Okay, I'm only like 10 months behind the curve here, but I just started playing Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Vegas a few days ago, and man, what a superb game.

I love the tactical stuff, and sending my two AI-controlled buddies to scout out a room or execute a pincer move on a band of thugs is just good times all around.

By the way, I have both the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions of the game, but I'm sticking to the 360 version, as I have with all cross-platform titles.

The reason?

Achievement points!

Sony is really missing the boat here, because I bet a lot of gamers with access to both systems are opting to play on the 360 when a game is available for both consoles simply because you want to ratchet up your gamerscore whenever possible.

Comments

Yeah, if I'm choosing a game that's on both systems, achievement points win out every time!

on a totally unrelated subject, the 360 Premium is on sale for $329.99 +FREE S&H +NO TAX @ Amazon.com

and if you look at it enough times, go to your "gold box" in amazon and it takes off an additional 5% off.

The Xbox 360 Premiums with HDMI plugs and (Zeus-willing) reliable 65 nanometer chips are out frolicking in the wild.

A Shacknews forum member reported buying a Premium with an HDMI outlet, and posted the photos to prove it.

Looks like the manufacture date was July 4 of this year. Independence from the Red Ring of Death!

Microsoft is remaining mum, so far, but if I were the Xbox guys, I'd be shouting this news from the digital rooftops.

I think a lot of gamers are sitting on the fence until the HDMI/65 nm systems are on the market, and the arrival of these upgraded systems could finally mean the end of the RROD saga.

But what do I know?

Comments

Not to sound like a shill, but Amazon has a video game deal every day. Just go to the Amazon video game section and look for the Deal of the Day button the right hand side.

Most of the time it's a mediocre game, or older game, so Forza was definitely an exception. As is today's deal of A wireless controller with charge and play kit for $50 which basically means you get a free charge and play kit.

But don't worry, they'll make up for it tomorrow by offering a discounted copy of Vampire Rain.

EGM reviews 'Lair" for the PS3

Posted by Doug
11:57 AM, August 7, 2007

I'm a little slow in pointing this out, but EGM's latest issue has their review of 'Lair', the highly anticipated dragon-battle game for the PS3.

I have been eagerly awaiting this game.

EGM's three reviewers gave the game 6.0 out of 10, 5.5 out of 10 and 5.0 out of 10. Most of the complaints were about the control scheme (it uses the SIXAXIS tilt features instead of the analog controls).

OUCH! (I still want it though...)

VICTOR: On the bright side, if the tilt controls really turn out to be a major flaw, Sony could always release a patch to enable regular analog controls. It would kind of undermine the point of having tilt controls in the first place, but I don't think anyone really cares about the technology anyway.

  Sony's press release

Posted by Doug
11:01 AM, August 7, 2007

Sony really didn't exactly react to the 360's price drop (yet), but they officially announced the 80gig PS3 and added this:

The 80GB model joins the existing 60GB PS3 that has been available at retail since launch last November. The 60GB PS3 is currently enjoying a surge in sales following a price reduction in the US and Canada on July 9 of $100 to $499/$549 CND. Since that date, unit sales at the company's top five retailers have jumped 113% when compared to the average sales of four weeks prior to the price drop. SCEA will continue to sell the 60GB in the US and Canada at the new, reduced price until current inventory is depleted, which is predicted to be this fall based on current consumer demand.

Doug's Theory: Pre-orders are killing the planet

Posted by Doug
12:10 PM, August 6, 2007

green.gif
Stick with me on this, because I think it's a good theory.

Recently I been bombarded "green" initiatives, both at work and in daily life. For instance: Ikea is no longer offering bags, movies are being shot with solar powered lights, Yahoo's got a "green" page, MTV has a conservation PSA every five minutes... you name it. While I'm not one to apply guilt and preach the virtues of these campaigns, they've started me analyzing the wasteful ways of others. I've been doing this more so for the "point-the-finger" satisfaction; but I'm not focusing on my wasteful ways, I already know how bad I am.

THE THEORY

So, here it is. My unscientific, but well thought out, theory: Video game pre-orders are killing the planet.

THE EVIDENCE

• Placing a game pre-order requires a shopper to drive to their local retailer to place the required $5 down-payment. For me, that's a round trip of 18 miles (from home and back). I burn roughly a gallon of gas, depending on traffic, to make this transaction. How many times is this repeated around the country?

• After placing the pre-order at the retail location the customer is usually given a paper receipt confirming "intent to buy" the game. Due to the fact that the transaction is recorded and assigned to the buyer's phone number, the receipt is completely useless and unnecessary. Sure it's just a little bit of paper, but think how many pre-orders occur each day. That's a lot of useless paper.

• There's also the electricity used to run the printer and computer at the store. It's a just a little energy used, but a little adds up, especially when it's such overkill.

• When the game arrives at the retail location, customers must return to the store to pick up their game. This requires another trip to the store (another 18 miles for me), another useless receipt (the one you have to sign to confirm you picked up the game) and yet another receipt for the purchase. I'm sure there's some extra electricity burned up there too.

MORE EVIDENCE (?)

Those facts above are pretty irrefutable. But, I came up with some more ideas that might add to the overall impact of pre-ordering:

• The store air-conditioning works harder to accommodate more traffic into the store to place pre-order. I'm sure store would love to hear that they should reduce traffic into their locations.

• Traffic congestion increases with more people driving to place their pre-orders. What about road and tire wear?

• Personal stress levels increase. I know I HATE pre-ordering a game. The idea that some random company can be earning interest on my money (that I could be earning interest on) so that I can have a game, worry-free, that releases in 5 months down the road, kills me. I'm not sure what impact that has on the environment, but I'm sure I could figure it out.

• There is more electricity used to transfer paper money into the store's electronic accounts.

THE SOLUTIONS

OK, I have tired-head now. Let me jump to the solutions. Some of these can be implemented right now, some will require a pitch to the retailers. Here's how we fix this and make "green gaming pre-orders":

• Allow online pre-orders for retail locations. I know there's a huge group or gamers that wants their new games the second they are released (I'm in that group too). Allow customers to place their pre-order online and choose their pick-up location. This saves a trip to the mall, reduces paper consumption, eliminates some transaction costs and reduces stress for the customer. I'm willing to make this pitch to retailers. Anyone wanna help?

• Eliminate redundant paper receipts. Tie the pre-order to a credit card number, ID number, address, username or phone number.

• Place LOTS of pre-orders at one time. You can do this now. You're not legally tied to buy the game so you can always get your money back. I try to do this anyway, but it hurts to dish out fifty bucks on a hope and a prayer.

• Stop pre-ordering. I know it's tough, especially when there's some goodies thrown in for early buyers, but it's a solution. I'm not doing this one.

CONCLUSION

Whew! That was exhausting. Being up on the soap box has worn me out.
Let me know what you think and feel free to offer up any other solutions you can come up with.

Hopefully, with the advent of downloadable content, pre-orders will become a thing of the past. Until then, I hope something can be done to reduce gamers impact on the earth and give us a little glory in the eyes of non-gamers. Besides, I would much rather take a nap than drive to the mall to place a pre-order.

VICTOR: Don't GameStop and Wal-Mart and other retailers already let you pre-order online?

I went to check out the Madden 08 page on gamestop.com, and the company even has a notice that if you preorder online and select overnight shipping, the game will be delivered to your door on the actual release date (next Tuesday, as a matter of fact.)

Walmart.com also has a "preorder" button if you try to buy Madden 08. Looks like the fastest shipping option, though, wouldn't get you the game until next Wednesday.

Granted, if you really want your copy of the game the minute retail doors open at 8 am or whatever, then online might not be your best bet.

But why even pre-order in the first place? Granted, some obscure titles might be a little hard to find, but I've never gone into a store and found any mainstream game was sold out.

Comments

Without even considering the environmental benefits, I stopped pre-ordering/reserving a long time ago. I found that if a EBgamestop doesn't have a game on launch the numerous surrounding retailers will (i.e. Target, Best Buy, Wal-Mart etc.) And what's more they won't try and force a guidebook or another pre-order on me when I go in to buy the game I actually want.

The only possible exception is for the rare, niche game that won't sell a lot of copies, and thus won't see a big release day order. Even then, I'm more likely to find it online than in a store that wants me to pre-order it because their shelf space has to make room for all the Madden they can get a hold of.

Not that there's anything wrong with Madden mind you.

  HMV mistakenly posted MGS4 pre-orders

European retailer HMV mistakenly posted pre-order information for the Xbox 360 version of 'Metal Gear Soild 4.' The game, supposedly a PS3 exclusive, has never been officially announced for the 360. Of course message boards and blogs lit up after this little error. And, according to many sources there may actually be a 360 version in the works. Read about the uh-oh here

  Crysis: end of an era?

Crysis_Annouce1.JPG

We don't really talk much about PC games around here, and that's not a coincidence, according to Mark Rein, vice president of Epic (you know, the guys who made Gears of War).

In an interview with ComputerAndVideoGames.com, Rein says that the upcoming PC shooter Crysis (publisher EA just announced a Nov. 16 release date, by the way) probably represents the graphical high water mark for computer games for at least the next several years.

That's because consoles have taken over the games industry, and none of the consoles on the market are capable of the DirectX 10-powered graphics that are possible on the highest-end PCs and that will be on display in Crysis.

So developers are calibrating their games right off the bat to take advantage of console capabilities, rather than creating a cutting-edge PC game and then spending additional time and money to tailor it for consoles.

Hardcore PC gamers probably won't be too thrilled, but the cost of staying on the forefront of PC gaming technology is simply too astronomical for most gamers to afford, so it's no surprise that consoles -- which are cheaper than most low-end PCs --are taking over.

Case in point, I'm only moderately interested in Crysis because, while it looks stunning in the official screenshots and videos, my PC doesn't even meet the minimum specs, much less the recommended specs. The only way I'll ever play this game is if it comes to the PS3 or Xbox 360.

And, as Rein says, the current crop of consoles -- excepting the Wii -- still have horsepower to spare, so it's not like we're stuck with Pong.

But it is a little sad to see one more nail punched into the velvet-lined coffin of PC gaming.

Comments

Until the consoles start supplying a mouse and keyboard, I'm NEVER giving up on PC Games. Sometimes, an anolog stick just doesn't cut it...
I say I spend about 50% of my gaming time on the PC...and the other half between my consoles.

Remember a few days ago I mentioned that now is the time of the year when all your hopes of an "amazing gaming fall" are dashed on the rocks due to release cancelations and delays? Well here's another one, the big one.

'Grand Theft Auto IV' for Xbox 360 and PS3 is being pushed back from October 2007 until, at least, April 2008.

This news comes officially from Take2 Interactive's posting here.

A nine month delay and Take2 drops this bombshell NOW? Two months before the scheduled release?

Comments

Blacksite is also delayed... :(
It's okay with me though, because I'll probably spend most of the holidays rockin' hard with GH III and Rock Band, tossin' the pigskin with Madden 08 on XBox Live, and lets not forget all the fun with the Wii games to look forward to.

Doug note: what Wii games?

Is this "secret" about the price drop to occur nextweek? (BORING!!!). Let's hope it's something juicy, like the addition of HDMI for the premium consoles, or a next gen Zune...maybe the Halo 360?

Looks like Ebgames.com has the new 80gig PS3 bundle and it says it's shipping within 24 hours.

It not only comes with 20 extra gigs of hard drive space, but also 'MotorStorm' and a $599 price tag.

This could be the death march for the 60gig PS3; so if you wanna save $100, you'd better act fast.

Dang! The super-cool PS3 flying-dragon game, 'Lair,' has been pushed back to September 4th.

According to the Official PS3 blog, the extra time is need to perfect the online portions of the game.

Is it just me or does it always seem like the "release date shuffle" starts at this time every year?
