And my game of the year is...

Posted by Victor Godinez

...available in my year-end wrap-up running in the paper today.

Gee, you didn't think I was going to give up the goods that easily, did you?

Okay, my top 10 list is also available after the jump.

I wrote this list over a week ago, and my only regret is that I'm only just now playing through Uncharted: Drake's Fortune on the PS3.

uncharted2.jpg

What a game. Superb graphics, solid gameplay and catchy sounds are all present and accounted for, but I was (and still am) stunned by the general presentation of the game. Smart, snappy dialog delivered by the best voice actors I have ever heard in a video game make Uncharted a flat-out revelation.

I know we're all supposed to be snobbishly pretending that games shouldn't want to be like movies, but, man, Uncharted is like the blockbuster Indiana Jones flick that Harrison Ford never got around to making.

I'd definitely put this game in my top five now, if I could, but I'm sure there are plenty of other games released in 2007 that I would have loved if I'd had time to play them.

Anyway, feel free to share your vote for your favorite games of 2007.

Seriously awesome. I'm going to try this myself this week, and I'll create a video of my own results.

And Nintendo, by the way, should be embarrassed that this guy beat them to the punch so badly.

  'Nights' is finally back

Posted by Doug
3:37 PM, December 21, 2007

nights12.jpgI have deep emotional attachments to a few game franchises. This means I get misty eyed and giddy when I get a new one in the series. 'Gran Turismo,' 'WipeOut,' 'Burnout,' 'Lumines,' and 'Need for Speed' are a few of my most cherished titles. 'Nights' and 'Christmas Nights' were up there too. I actually just watch the 'Christmas Nights' video clips on YouTube and I get all goose-bumpy. Dorky, I know.

I got the new 'Nights: Journey of Dreams' game for the Wii a couple of days ago and it provides the same euphoric rush that the originals had. It's not a game for everyone, but I think fans of the originals will love it.

The graphics are crazy day-glo, the characters are hyper cute, the cut scenes are un-skip-able and the controls take a little bit of time to get used to; but I love the game.

Unlike the original game on the Sega Saturn, there is no analog controller that comes in the package. Instead, you can use the nun-chuck, the Wii-mote or the retro controller thingy with the cord. Each provides a different experience.

I was reluctant to use the Wii-mote, but it's not as difficult as I had been reading. Actually, it's somewhat natural to use it the way you do in the game. Guiding a flying whachamacallit-faerie with the wave of a hand is kinda cool.

nights122.jpg
The flying parts of the title are still gaming magic. 'Nights' is kind of like a racer on rails but it's up in the air and with bad guys attacking. The levels have more things to do and more going on than the original Saturn offerings; but somehow it all feels very familiar.

One of my favorite things in the Wii 'Nights' is that all the original sound effects are present from the 10-year old initial offering... it's really weird to hear them and have them trigger happy thoughts of the past. It's like the countdown in 'Gran Turismo' or the mine-dropping sound in 'WipeOut;' it's just locked in my subconscious memory.

I have a few gripes so far. You can't skip some of the irritating cut scenes or the obnoxious training levels. And some parts of the game actually have you walking 2 inches forward before you encounter another cut scene or load screen. It's really weird game design.

My biggest complaint is Night's voice. He's the blue-sprite-thing that "assimilates" with your character and flies around Nightopia. He sounds like a 30 year old lady from England. I don't have a problem with said ladies, but I have a problem with their voice coming out of a beloved character that I always assumed would have a male voice. Actually, I kind of liked the idea of Night being mysterious and silent like he was in the '90's.

The fun of the game outweighs the complaints. The flying, looping and gathering is almost cathartic and relaxing... and I remember that was a feeling associated with the original game, too. Hopefully old fans of the first 'Nights' will find the same enjoyment with this game as I do and I hope its success leads more games in the future. I'm already determined to get my hands on the PS2 remake of the original two titles... more to come on that.

MadCatz XBox 360 HDMI converter almost here

hdmi_conversion_kit.jpg
For those of you who purchased an HDMI-less, older version of the XBox 360 console, you might be glad to hear that for $89.99 you can get rid of a few cables behind your entertainment system. MadCatz has developed an adapter that plugs into the A/V port and supplies an HDMI as well as an optical audio cable port. These nifty little devices are available for pre-order at GameStop, and is set to be available at New Years. Product info (pdf)

I wonder if the HDMI adapter will introduce a bit of lag in the display. I've read that conversion of an analog signal to a digital signal will produce a 1-frame lag at minimum.

Xbox 360 RROD repairs still suck

Posted by Victor Godinez

Xbox360-ringofdeath.jpg

What a fiasco. Granted, in the big scheme of things, it's just a game console.

But it's a game console that people have spent hundreds of dollars to buy, and invested hundreds more in games and peripherals.

Microsoft is acting extremely dishonorably, and is doing untold damage to its brand with this kind of shoddy treatment of its customers.

UPDATE: I see from the comments that I have not been clear on what I'm complaining about. Yes, Microsoft is fixing the broken consoles. But the problem is that Microsoft is apparently taking WEEKS to do so. To those readers and commenters who feel I'm being unfair to Microsoft, ask yourself this: If your console had broken down for the second (or third, or fourth, or worse) time, and each repair took weeks to complete, and you kept receiving malfunctioning units back from Microsoft, would you feel that Microsoft had done a good job taking care of you, the customer? Or would you feel that they were doing the absolute minimum to avoid a class action lawsuit?

Comments

well considering they have spent bilions on the warrenty and to cover the costs of repair so to say they are not looking after their customers is a joke

I don't know what corner of the universe you have been reporting in, but Microsoft has extended the manufacturer's warranty to three years, is replacing units extremely quickly and has fixed the underlying problem in the latest shipping units.

What gives you the right to make up things and report them as "news" instead of reporting the actual facts?

i only had my game for 6 months and i dont know how to fix it

'Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords' for Wii

Posted by Doug
1:52 PM, December 12, 2007

wiipq2.jpgHands down, one of my favorite games of the year is 'Puzzle Quest' on Xbox Live. I've spent hours and hours with this puzzler... one weekend, I wasted an entire Saturday playing. I never do that, but it's that good.

I'm totally late to the 'PQ' scene. I'd read a gajillion blog posts praising the title, but the RPG mentions kept me from trying it. I'm not a big RPG fan.

Thank goodness, I got over my stubborn self and gave the game a try. You know the rest: here's my first explanation of 'PQ' and reaction to the game.

A couple of weeks ago I received the press release announcing the Nintendo Wii version of the game; and I politely begged the publicist at D3 to send a review copy. She did, and I played all weekend.

I won't go deeply into the rules of the game. I've explained those to death on here. To simply sum it up: it's a turn based RPG with the battles taking place on an easy-to-understand, but very deep, puzzle board. Like most RPG's, there are spells, power-ups and tons of evil baddies to defeat. It's an RPG for RPG haters (like me).

What I want to do, now, is point out the main features (and my opinions) of the Wii version of 'Puzzle Quest,' in bullet-list form:

• First, the most important part: the gameplay. It plays essentially the same as the Xbox Live, PSP and DS versions of the game. That is to say, it's fantastic... my favortite puzzle game in years.

• The mechanics of the gameplay on the Wii? Not so fantastic. You can use the Wii-mote alone or you can add the Nun-chuck for quicker navigation. Either way, you have to point the Wii-mote at the screen to control the puzzle board. This method requires too much precision and lends itself to making stupid mistakes. After about a half-hour, my arms were aching and I was holding the controller with two hands. I would have preferred to just turn the Wii-mote sideways and play the game like a traditional puzzler or VC title. The Nun-chuck addition makes navigating faster, but overly complicated.

Oh, one good thing, the vibration in the controller when you connect skulls or cast a spell is awesome. It almost jars your sleepy hand awake.

• I didn't expect the Wii 'Puzzle Quest' graphics to look as good as the Xbox Live version, but I never expected them to look as rough as they do. Everything has a jaggy old-school look to it, making it seem like this game belongs on the Super NES (Maybe this should have been a VC title for download?) rather than the Wii.

Compared to other versions, the main playing board is squeezed into the middle of the screen and the counters and spells are widened on the side. I'm not sure why. If this is your only version of the game, you'd never bring this into question, but the difference was very pronounced for me.

• The sound effects are great... I love the clinking of the falling gems; but there's a problem with the music. The music on the Xbox Live version is one of my favorite game scores, ever. It has a cinematic feel that wouldn't seem out of place in a big blockbuster movie. The Wii version has the same great music, it just seems to jarringly silence itself without fading out. There's no gentle transition from tune to tune, just music slamming into a wall of silence. It's kind of sloppy.

So, even though I was a little frustrated by a few aspects of this iteration of 'Puzzle Quest,' I still couldn't stop playing. The gameplay is still crazy addictive and is the true draw for this title.

If you have access to other consoles, I'm not sure the Wii version would be your best choice; but if you only have a Wii, there is no better puzzle game. Just work on your arm strength before playing.

Comments

PQ is like crack. I too have spent a whole Saturday playing it. I have played both the Nintendo DS and XBoxLive versions. The DS definately has an advantage with the use of the touchscreen and stylus. However, the gamerscore keeps me playing the XBoxLive version :) Someone point me to the PQ rehab.

I got 'Rock Band' replacement guitar #2 and...

Posted by Doug
11:48 AM, December 12, 2007

... it's an empty box.

Really, I got an empty box that contains a packing slip stating: "Rock Band Guitar, Quantity: 1."

'Rock Band' is now on the top of my "Most Hated Games of 2007" list.

Yes, I said "hate." My nieces would be so ashamed of me.

Oh, and the drum pedal gave me plantar fasciitis. Seriously.

VICTOR COMMENT: Dude, I, well, I don't know, that blows. And speaking of the drums, I'm beginning to suspect that the drums might be the least used peripheral of all time. Seriously, they're impossible to play, a pain in the... foot, and all you can hear while playing is the thwap sound of the sticks hitting the plastic case.

Comments

Well, I got my replacement guitar yesterday...LOVE the new strum bar, but the new buttons SUCK!!! They're so, 'clicky'...if there is such a word. And with my fast fingers, I feel like the buttons are too slow to 'pop' back up. If only I could rig my GHIII guitar with the new Rockband strumbar, I'd be set :)

New 'Halo 3' maps and 'Rock Band' offers "Punk Pack #1"

Posted by Doug
10:03 AM, December 12, 2007

The new "Heroic Map Pack" is available for 'Halo 3.'

From Major Nelson:

The Heroic map pack contains three new maps, each presenting a totally different play style. Standoff’s symmetrical valley, with its entrenched bases and fields of boulders is ideal for mid-sized objective and Slayer game types, while Rat’s Nest’s vast, labyrinthine passages bring something quite new to the Halo multiplayer experience – an indoor vehicle paradise, strongly influenced by the Campaign mode ideal for big team battles. Finally, Foundry is the ultimate Forge map – players can edit every single object in this voluminous industrial warehouse, place stairways, walls, bridges and tunnels to create an entirely new play space and build almost any kind of map they can think of.

AND for all you 'Rock Band' members, check out the new "Punk Pack" with these songs:

• "I Fought the Law" by the The Clash
• "Rockaway Beach" by the Ramones
• A cover of "Ever Fallen in Love" by Buzzcocks

Time Magazine's top 10 games of the year.

Posted by Doug

Yea! Another list!

This time it's... uh, Time... uh, Magazine:

1. Halo 3
2. Orange Box
3. Rock Band
4. Super Mario Galaxy
5. Bioshock
6. Call of Duty 4
7. Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass
8. Mass Effect
9. Ace Combat 6: Fires of Liberation
10. God of War 2

Pretty mainstream list there, Time. I'm pretty impressed by all of those... wait, 'Ace Combat 6'?! That's a nice change of pace. OH, and I heard that last game was on some old system, so it doesn't count. Just kidding... I almost forgot about 'GoW2!'

Read the whole thing here

Comments

That is pretty main-stream. I heard some mixed reviews on Mass Effect, though it may have more to do with hype vs. reality than the actual quality of the game. Have you played/looked at The Witcher yet?

Doug comment: I have never played a serious PC-based RPG. I've given up on PC gaming in the last year. I just love not having to wait for something to boot-up.

Red Ring of Death - Round 2

Posted by Melcolm
6:10 PM, December 10, 2007

I had an XBox 360 replaced in November 2006, a casualty of the infamous RRoD problem (Red Ring of Death). Gears of War was just relased, and it's intense graphics processing took a toll on many XBoxes during the 2006 holiday season. I was forced to take a leave of absence from achieving gamerscore points for 3 whole weeks (the length of time it took to get my replacement XBox). The "new" XBox got me another year's worth of warranty, WOOHOO!

A whole year goes by without a problem...but literally days after my warranty expires I get this:
e74_2.png

One blinking red light, and an error message telling me to contact XBox Customer Support. "E 74"...whatver that means?!?!?! I gave the customer support center a call, and they said that it would cost me $99 to repair. "WHAT?!, I thought there was a 3yr warranty for all XBox 360s?!?!?!" The rep explained to me that the 3yr deal only applies to the 3 flashing lights problem...not the 1,2, or 4 flashing light problems. I was furious, but eventually surrendered my 16 digit Visa number to them. I can look forward to another 3 weeks with no xboxlive :(

I've done some digging on the web to see if others were experiencing this issue, and as expected I found a few topics at the xbox.com forums:

Thread 1

Thread 2

Thread 3

Why is Microsoft limiting the 3yr warranty to the 3 lights issue, when apparently there are other hardware issues that are much too common? By reading some other user's comments, I might be lucky that this is only the 2nd time that I'm going through this. I'd be half as angry right now if MS started a swap-out program, just as EA is doing with the RockBand guitars. Then I wouldn't have to wait 3 whole weeks to build upon my gamerscore. ARRGGGGGHHH!!!

Comments

Eek ... I actually received mine back a week to the day that I sent it in. However, they didn't repair it; they simply sent me a refurbished 360.

Associated Press' end of the year gaming list

Posted by Doug
4:30 PM, December 10, 2007

Matt Slagle, the AP tech writer, created his end of the year gaming list. I like the dissing of 'Halo 3' and the praise of 'Call of Duty 4.' Also, Matt's "worst trend" is spot-on...

BEST GAME: "BioShock." A first-person shooter turned morality
play, a thinking person's action game, a piece of electronic
fiction with a soul. There are many positive ways to describe this
gripping game and they're all true. There's just nothing else like
this eerie vision of an undersea social experiment gone horribly
wrong. Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Windows PC, $59.99, Rated M.

BEST DEAL: The Orange Box. For $59.99, the innovators at Valve
Corp. have provided one of the best bargains in 2007. You get five
games, and all of them are excellent. "Portal," in particular,
seems destined for legendary status, having spawned a cottage
industry for plush companion cubes. (If you don't know what that
means, you're really missing out). Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Windows
PC, $59.99, Rated T through M.

BEST GAME THAT INVOLVES GETTING OFF THE SOFA: "Rock Band."
Close the windows, lock the doors and warn the neighbors before you
blare the volume. "Rock Band" elevates music rhythm games to
arena-filling levels in a game that gets better the more people
there are. For a true rocking experience you'll at least need two
guitars -- lead and bass -- plus a drummer and a singer to belt out
the dozens of tunes. Groupies are optional.

WORST TREND: The annual holiday video game deluge. Please, video
game makers, you're only hurting your most loyal fans here. We
spend all year with hardly anything new to play, then October rolls
around and it's like an avalanche. Suddenly, we're faced with tough
decisions about which of the dozens of good games we can actually
afford to buy. Why not release more of these gems in the winter,
spring or summer doldrums, when we're really looking for -- and more
able to afford -- something new?

My replacement 'Rock Band' guitar is a dud too!

Posted by Doug
11:54 AM, December 7, 2007

broken.jpgI received my first replacement guitar for 'Rock Band' and after just a few minutes of "rocking," the tilt feature stopped working. I went through the whole process of connecting, re-connecting, turning on, turning off and re-praying. Nothing will fix it.

I ordered my second replacement, but the sad thing is... I had just put a $10 cool skull-covered skin on the newly broken guitar. Ta-da... I'm out 10 bucks.

I was a little shocked that the replacement controller comes in a thin cardboard box with the impact resistance of a piece of toilet paper. Does EA really think that holiday shippers are going to be gentle with these things?

I called EA... and, after a lot of whining, they gave me a $20 gift card to the EA store to accommodate my frustration (and whining).

What is up with these controllers? Even punchbutton's other non-blogger, Melcolm, had a faulty guitar.

I think it would have been cheaper to make a higher quality axe from the get-go.

Anyone else having problems?

Family report card shows the 10 games your children need to avoid

Posted by Doug
11:06 AM, December 6, 2007

MediaFamily.org posted their annual report card on the video game industry. You can download your own copy HERE.

Besides giving a "C" letter-grade to parental involvement with gaming, a "C-" average to retailers' enforcing of the game rating system (national retailers got a "D" and rental stores got an "F"), a "C" to the game industry as a whole, the group also pointed out the 10 most avoidable games for children and teens.

Let's take a look at the list:
• Assassin’s Creed
• Call of Duty 4
• Conan
• The Darkness
• Jericho
• Kane & Lynch: Dead Men
• Manhunt 2
• Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles
• Stranglehold
• Time Shift

Doug's opinion of a glaring omission: 'Soldier of Fortune: Payback.' And what's up with 'Conan?' Did anyone even play that game?

So what are better alternatives that the report card suggests?

These:
• FIFA Soccer 08
• Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock
• Hannah Montana: Spotlight World Tour
• Madden NFL 08
• Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games
• Need for Speed Pro Street
• The Sims 2: Castaway
• Super Mario Bros. 3
• Super Mario Galaxy
• Viva Piñata

Ewww, 'Hannah Montana'? That's way scarier than 'Manhunt 2!'

Jeff Gerstmann's 'Kayne and Lynch' review.

Posted by Doug
5:54 PM, December 5, 2007

Here's the oft-mentioned "controversial" review that may, or may not, have had something to do with Jeff Gerstmann's firing from GameSpot.com.

Doesn't seem so bad to me.

Comments

I dont get it. I was about to buy this game without renting, because the commercial was so cool. Otherwise, I do exactly what jeff does here when I rent a game. I play it and then make an informed decision on whether or not this game is worth a hard earned 50 bucks. I appreciate what jeff did as a game reviewer, movie critics do not suck the teat of all movies and studios, so why should jeff. Apparently the game just isnt that good. Not the first shooter to fall into that category.

Confusion over Xbox 360 HD-DVD price drop.

Posted by Doug

Several blogs posted that the xbox 360 HD-DVD add-on dropped in price to $129.

There is evidence at ToysRUs.com (HERE)... but the page currently says "not available online."

The link that many were posting to Amazon, shows the player still listed at $179. EBGames and GameStop still have the add-on for the higher price.

So what's the truth?

Was this one of Amazon's "certain price for certain people" schemes? Or is this actually the new price?

I'm all confused.

  Gamespot still won't come clean

Posted by Victor Godinez
2:37 PM, December 5, 2007

Gamespot has finally issued a Q&A-style denial that pressure from Eidos led to the sacking of Jeff Gerstmann.

But the one question that Gamespot refuses to answer is the keystone to this entire controversy:

Q: Why was Jeff fired?
A: Legally, the exact reasons behind his dismissal cannot be revealed. However, they stemmed from issues unrelated to any publisher or advertiser; his departure was due purely for internal reasons.

Frankly, there are simply too many credible, anonymous sources saying otherwise for gamers to take Gamespot's word on the matter.

And Gamespot does admit that Eidos made known its displeasure with Gerstmann's Kane & Lynch review.

So, according to Gamespot's own official remarks, Eidos paid a bunch of money to advertise K&L on the site, the subsequent review of the game was harsh and Eidos complained, and the offending reviewer -- a 10-year veteran of the company -- was fired shortly thereafter.

Plus, the text of the print review was altered, in some cases adding praise that wasn't there in the original review, while the video review was supposedly pulled for "concerns of quality," before being shoved back on the site as the furor grew.

Look, where there's smoke, there's usually fire, and there are just too many gray clouds billowing from Gamespot's offices to settle for a simple assurance that all is well.

And it's not like Gerstmann is exactly trying to diffuse suspicion that his firing was unethical.

Also, check out this N'Gai Croal column at Newsweek's gamer blog for some background on the awkward relationship between gaming blogs and Web sites and game publishers.
