Explanation of fighting combos in "Batman: Arkham Asylum"

3:29 PM, August 27, 2009
If you haven't picked up "Batman: Arkham Asylum" for your PS3 (slim?) or Xbox 360 ... go now! It's an amazing game. Easily, one of the top games of the year.
The fighting is amazingly fun and easy to perform with just a bunch of button mashes. But, there's a method to the madness that will give you much higher scores and help improve Batman's experience level.
Here a video explaining how to get BIG combo scores. Keep in mind, with no real plan, you're only getting 5x to 8x combos in these scenes. So pay attention:

Yoko Ono and the making of "The Beatles: Rock Band"

11:41 AM, August 14, 2009
I wish I were more excited about "The Beatles: Rock Band;" but I was never a fan of their music. Don't kill me.
I'm am, slightly, more interested in the game after reading this article, about the game's creation, on wired.com.
Particularly interesting is what the development team says about working with Yoko Ono and her input on the game. The Harmonix team's opinions of her are polite and biting at the same time. It made me giggle.
I loved their quote about her 12th-hour input, "it would have been nice to know that six months ago, but yes, thank you very much." Awesome.

QuakeCon is this week!

4:45 PM, August 10, 2009
If you're in the Dallas / Fort Worth / North Texas area this week, try try try to get to QuakeCon at the Gaylord Texan Resort in Grapevine.
You owe it to yourself to see this ridiculously gigantic LAN party and game festival. Besides lots of cool keynotes, workshops and presentations there's a lot to see and do for gamers and video game fans.
The best part is that the whole thing is completely free.
I would pay particular attention to the id software presentation at 3:00pm on Thursday and the 4:00pm John Carmack keynote address that same day. Those are always chock full of cool info and gaming.
The very first public demonstration of Bethesda's first-person shoot game "Brink" will occur on Friday, August 14th at 1:00pm on the main stage. Remember, this is the studio that brought us "Fallout 3," so this will be a massive reveal.

The most annoying in-game advertising. Ever.

1:56 PM, August 4, 2009
I've been meaning to do an article/blog-entry about the amazing downloadable content finding its way on to game consoles this Summer. More on that later.
Some of the better pieces of DLC available for the PS3 have been "WipEout HD's" 2.0 update and "Fury" additions. More on those later, too.
The "Fury" update not only brought "WipEout HD" some completely awesome gameplay changes, new tracks and ships, but also some of the worst in-game advertising, ever.
I can handle in-game billboards and product placement; heck, the first few "WipEout" games featured animated Red Bull logos, such as this example:
... but, really irks me is the intrusion of a game-stopping interstitial ad for State Farm Insurance in the new "Fury" download. Here it is:
I immediately checked Twitter and numerous gamers were already complaining about the ad. I also voiced my frustration.
Again, I'm fine with in-game advertising, but there are lines that publishers should not cross.
Here are my problems with this State Farm ad:
1. The ad stops the loading of the games levels. It greatly increases load time. This has been proven HERE.
2. This intrusive ad is in a PAID piece of game content. The "Fury" update is $9.99 on the PlayStation Store. If the content was free, I wouldn't be complaining.
3. The ad appears over and over in the game. I was getting it every other level. Some gamers were saying 3 to 4 times an hour and when they disconnected the PS3 from their internet connection. Once per game would have made sense.
4. The ad doesn't really fit with the theme of the game or seemingly the demographic. It desperately tries too hard to be "hip."
So, who's to blame for this in-your-face advertising technique? A company called Double Fusion. They are touting the ad in THIS press release.
The release offers this:
Taking advantage of WipEout HD's 1080p high definition capabilities, Double Fusion's video ads approach the HD graphics experienced during gameplay. Developed to contextually match the game's sleek futuristic design, video advertisements complement the WipEout HD world seamlessly.
I think we need a little more "seamlessness."
Earlier today, posts from several gaming blogs say that the ads are being removed. Eurogamer.net touts the removal HERE; and Kotaku was linking to a "WipEout" forum also saying the ad is gone (HERE).
So, are these annoying ads gone for good? Don't bet on it. I'm sure this is just the beginning of the future of in-game advertising. I wonder if, in a few years, we'll look back and say, "that was nothing, now look at what we have!"
Stay tuned.
