'GTA IV' irritations

I'm irritated a few little things in 'GTA IV' and I wanted to know if anyone else felt the same way.

• I'm frustrated with the pre-missions in some of the main mission segments. These are the simple busy-work parts where you have to drive to a location, follow someone, steal something or chase someone before the meat of the mission begins. It's usually right after these early, easy-parts, that I'm instantly killed because I'm so worn out by what precedes the action... and I'm not paying attention. The real beating comes when you have to start the entire mission over... including the boring easy part. I wish the game would start right where you died.

• I'm tired of the music that plays when the game auto-saves: "Do - do - dum - do." It haunts my dreams.

• What's up with invisible props? I drove across what I thought was an empty patch of grass... then BAM, my car comes to a complete stop with a crashing sound of metal. Slowly, phantom playground equipment appears in front of my car. Where did that come from?

• The Russian clothing store.

• Toll booths

• Jumping a car up to a balcony or other small location where the vehicle becomes permanently stuck.

• Motorcycles seem vanish from Liberty City only when I want/need them.

Quick review: 'Speed Racer' the movie. Too much talking, awesome racing scenes and colors that will burn your eyes. Lop off the first hour and it's great!

Microsoft is making a huge mistake.

This is all anecdotal, but I swear Microsoft is killing themselves by not offering a Blu-Ray player in the Xbox 360.

After the release of 'GTA IV' I have had several friends tell me they were planning on buying a PS3 within the next few days. When I asked them if they had considered an Xbox 360, all of them said they really wanted the Blu-Ray player to watch movies. Every single person said the same thing. And these are non-gamers who are dying to try 'GTA IV' and watch high-def movies.

Even after I explained the virtues of Achievement Points, downloadable content and Xbox Live, the number one selling point for my friends was the Blu-Ray compatibility.

I guess you can point out that the Wii is surviving without a High-Def video player, but it has a broader appeal than both Sony's and Microsoft's systems.

C'mon Microsoft, bite the bullet.

  Is Resident Evil 5 racist?

Posted by Victor Godinez

As I discussed in my game column in the paper this morning, here's a link to the comments from N'Gai Croal at Newsweek about the portrayal of race in the upcoming Resident Evil 5.

And here's a video of the preview in question (a high-res version is available here):

You might also want to check out this video interview with the producer of RE5. He doesn't address the topic of race specifically, but does say the developers decided to set the game in Africa because the game explores the origins of the zombie virus and Africa is considered the birthplace of the human race.

So what do y'all think?

Comments

It's funny reading those comments. It always amazes me when people find elements that aren't there or overemphasize things. The Japanese didn't create black zombies on the game becuase they like seeing that race of people dying or fulfilling a stereotype. Resident Evil has had all type of zombies in the past. They've had many locations. Are they somehow barred from having Africa as a location? I mean Africa is the location where they found the oldest human remains. The individuals who dig up racist conspiracies are usually the people that are in themselves most racist of all. These people limit society from having fruitful discussions about race becuase if you disagree with any views of theirs it's countered by calling you racist.

This is utterly absurd to bring an issue like this up. I see nothing hateful nor racist from this preview nor noticed due to the fact that IT'S A JUST A GAME (Japanese at that). This game is simply geographicly correct and shows the gamers some reality of modern wartorn life in Africa.

many people like to say that no one was complaining when the zombies were white or spaniards. but blacks never enslaved or oppressed either group, or at least not on the scale that whites have. people who can't see that are just plain dumb.

Wow! But high-res version not running

One thing to note about those MGS4 details...

From the release:

The Limited Edition will be available exclusively at GameStop.

There's a reason GameStop is a $9 billion company.

GameStop scores even during a recession

I wrote an article for today's Business section about how game retailer GameStop is thriving even in a recession/economic slowdown.

Of course, part of the definition of "thriving" is that you'll continue to get paid a pittance for any used games you want to trade in.

'Grand Theft Auto IV' thoughts... let's see how this goes.

Posted by Doug

OK. I'm pretty much convinced that 'Grand Theft Auto IV' is going to be an amazing game when it finally gets released on April 29th.

When the first trailer hit last year (the one with the amazing roller coaster drive-by scene), I was a little skeptical. I just kept thinking, "there is no way the game is gonna look this good."

As each additional trailer was released, I lost the awe of original clip... right up to the release most recent trailer, which has worried me the most.

Is it just me, or has the game really been scaled-back in the looks department? I just don't think the same level of graphic next-gen-ness, that we saw last year, is in this latest trailer.

It's the TV marketing campaign for 'GTA IV' (and GameStop) that starting to reverse my trepidation. I love the style of ads and the ridiculously varied set pieces that are shown in the 60 second spots.

Here it is:

But something over the weekend pushed me into the same giddiness that I felt last year when I saw the first footage from the game: an interview with someone that's already finished the game on gamesradar.com. This is enough to make me wish April 29th was here now.

I'm easy, huh? But let's see how this goes...

Will a recession derail the Wii?

Here's my column in the paper today, looking at whether a slow economy might cool casual gamers' interest in the Wii.

I also explain why I think the latest rumors of a Blu-ray equipped Xbox 360 are hogwash.

Will there ever be enough Wii's (for women)?

Yesterday (March 30th), I was headed into Best Buy to waste a little time; and I was greeted at the front door by a line of nearly 300 people.

Apparently it was "Wii for Women" day at the store. I haven't heard of this concept. I thought Wii was for everyone. But, on March 30th, Wii was for women.

Here's the flyer for the event.

So what was the draw? Besides the event "focusing on women and... Wii," there also seemed to be a few dozen Wii's for sale beginning at 1:00 PM... which explains the large number of men in the "Wii for Women" line outside the store. Oh, and there were also prizes including spa packages and GPS units.

This brings up numerous questions in my mind, such as:

• When the #$%&! will Nintendo make enough Wii's for everyone? C'mon, it has been nearly a year and a half.
• Why do women LOVE Garmin GPS units so much (I know this from personal experience)?
• When is "Wii for Men" day?
• Why were Hawaii and Alaska excluded from this event... would they both not benefit from Wii, women, GPS's and spas?

Just wondering.

DOUG UPDATE: I guess I should have read Victor's article Saturday... that would have given me a clue!

Comments

I helped run this event in the Frisco Best Buy. It was for everyone but it was to show how awesome the Wii can be for everyone. I am a gamer myself and I think video games are just another awesome way to relax, not all women have discovered this yet so we are just opening up doors. I usually suggest FPS for higher amounts of stress relief.

Doug response: COOL! I should have introduced myself, but everyone looked very busy.
I would have loved to have documented the event for pb!

My Brawl review has attracted some irate comments.

Perhaps this essay from GameSetWatch can lend some useful perspective to those angry commenters.

What's interesting is that nobody has said my criticisms of the game are incorrect. Rather, I should love the game because everybody loves this game because it has Mario and everyone loves Mario and I SUCK!!!

Also, I'm a hater.

By the way, here's my column from Saturday about why it's still so hard to find a Wii.

And here's my column from last week, that I forgot to post, about how the PS3 is beginning to outsell the Xbox 360.

Column: Why PC games (hopefully) still matter

Posted by Victor Godinez
4:47 PM, March 4, 2008

In my column this past weekend, I tried to come up with reasons to convince myself that PC gaming is not a mangled corpse trampled beneath the console gaming hordes.

I decided to write on this topic because I just ordered a new computer after my 4+ year-old Alienware finally succumbed to a massive motherboard failure FOR THE FOURTH TIME.

I bought a semi-boring HP machine this time that still has some decent hardware under the hood.

Unfortunately, while I ordered the computer last week, it looks like it won't be delivered until sometime next week.

Still, I'm pretty pumped and looking forward to finally playing all the PC titles that I'd been ignoring.

Comments

Victor, I'm surprised by now that you haven't tried building your own pc. I think most of the hardcore gamers built their own pcs to the limit so they can play games like crysis and bioshock on its highest settings. It is also very satisfying to build something like a pc from scratch.

Hi Tony,

I thought about it. Trying to keep my previous computer running basically did involve a complete rebuild, since I had to install a new motherboard.

That means disconnecting and reconnecting the video card, hard drive, processor and so forth. And I've installed new DVD drives and RAM and all that.

But I decided not to build a new PC because it's just too much of a pain, and the profit margins on pre-built desktop PCs are so slim that there's not much savings to be found anymore in building your own.

Still, if I ever win the lottery and have money and -- most importantly -- free time to spare, I'd certainly like to give it a try.

SquareTrade explains its report of a 16.4% Xbox 360 failure rate

Posted by Victor Godinez

Online warranty company SquareTrade made plenty of headlines when it reported a 16.4 percent failure rate on Xbox 360 consoles it covered.

In response to the interest generated by that initial report, the company has provided some more details on its blog of the methodology it used for coming up with that failure rate.

The money quote:

this report only tracks this test group for a period of 6 to 10 months after warranty purchase (ending January 31, 2007). Once this same test group is tracked for 24 or 36 months, the fail rate is certain to go up. Our data shows that failures spike in the third month after warranty purchase but remain fairly steady after that, with only incremental drop-off until the eighth month. This pattern is fairly consistent with all electronics failures.
