  'Left 4 Dead' is a multi-player must

Don't do this. Promise you won't.

Absolutely do not play 'Left 4 Dead' (Xbox 360) on single player.

EVER!

I'll admit it. I started the game on single player the first time I played it. I was seriously disappointed. I couldn't figure out what all the buzz was about. Luckily I stopped about 15 minutes into the first round.
l4d.jpg
Then I tried online multi-player campaign mode with former punchbutton blogger Melcolm. That's when I realized what all the buzz was about.

'Left 4 Dead' is probably the ultimate run, shoot, talk and "strategize with teammates" multi-player game out now. It's crazy fast, scary and fun.

The game stays pretty simple. There's a zombie apocalypse going on outside. You and three others have to survive with a limited amount of weapons, a little bit of ammo and a few first-aid kits. Your goal is basically to move, as a group, from safe-house to safe-house without getting killed.

There's not just a few stumbling lumbering zombies waiting to take you down. In this game, there are literally THOUSANDS of running, leaping, slashing, grabbing, exploding and vomiting hordes of walking dead ready to pounce on you from almost everywhere. It's hilariously chaotic and completely random... you can't find patterns to the madness, you have to plan for every possibility.

Melcolm and I tried several times to use the "run-as-fast-as-you-can-and-don't-look-back" approach with varying degrees of success (but mostly failure). 'Left 4 Dead' never lets you figure it out. You must stay on guard at all times. That's why communication and on-the-fly strategies are so important. It's why single player just doesn't feel right.

Thrown into the mix of random citizen zombies are five distinct mega-zombies with increased powers:
• There's the hulking Tank zombie... he's kind of like the comic book Hulk. He has brute strength that will literally knock you across town.
• The Witch zombie hides, cries and fiercely attacks when you disturb her. Her glowing eyes in the dark will give you shivers!
• The Hunter zombie has a leaping attack that can only be fought off with the aid of another team member.
• The Smoker zombie has a tentacle-like tongue that can stretch for yards and drag you away from the rest of your team.
• The Boomer zombie is chubby green dude that is easy to kill, but his vomit blinds you and is an attractant to other zombies.

At first, I was bothered by the addition of these enhanced zombies to the story-line, but they help the game mix things up, especially since you never know where they will appear. They also make it challenging to keep your group together since everyone will want to run away when they show up. Just when you think you have figured out how to escape a chapter, along comes one of these irritants. It's good game design.

Not only are you running and gunning, but each player may have to play doctor and assist fallen teammates when their health runs low. This adds yet another element to the game's challenge. Do you save your butt and hoard your med-pack or do you share it with another team member to keep them alive and hopefully assist you to the end of the level?

There are a few buggy issues that I've encountered so far. I've been stuck in walls, frozen in place and encountered some collision/clipping problems. Nothing major, but I hope that some can be fixed in update.

And speaking of updates, it looks like DLC for 'Left 4 Dead' is being prepared as I type this. A shopping mall level inspired by the movie "Dawn of the Dead" should make it's way to Xbox Live marketplace soon. Sweet!

'Left 4 Dead' is one of the most fun gaming experiences I've had this Fall. I'm hoping it's appeal lasts as gamers figure out the best strategies and paths.

I'm hoping to settle in to the versus mode soon and see what it's like to play a zombie. I kinda wish the zombies had guns, too.

If you're into online gaming, 'L4D' is a no-brainer purchase. If you're a shy gamer, this might be the game to push you into actually using your microphone. Either way, it's brilliant fun and a nice way to add some unnecessary violence to your holidays.

Oh no. With Versus mode, no need for guns. The zombies are a BLAST to play. You can employ so many strategies (yes, it's better to work as a team than go solo on them) and demolish the teams. It is extremely satisfying snatching up the last standing survivor with a Smoker to win the round, or to be a hunter and get a distance pounce from off a roof to catch a straggler. I played the demo as soon as it came out, but I have yet to play through a single campaign on the full version, because I'm addicted to Versus mode.

Thanks for the info , its really nice game and i will go buy it this weekend ^^

GREAT review, and i couldnt agree more. Still playing the same maps over and over again since day 1. Can't wait for some DLC.

'Little Big Planet' is out... the servers are down. Questions arise.

'Little Big Planet' was readily available in many locations last weekend... a few days ahead of the official, pushed-back, release date. The single player game worked great, but all the online features were missing... the LBP servers didn't start up until Monday. Then the servers crashed.

I was lucky enough to take part in the online beta a few weeks ago, and that part of the game is AMAZING! The last few days, I've been going through the single player game... it's a blast, but it gets crazy-tough... very quickly, especially if you are trying to get 100% on each level.

As of last night, the LBP servers were still down. For me, this is extremely frustrating, I'm dying to get back into the online LBP communities and I'm itching to play multi-player co-op. It was the part of the beta test that made my jaw drop.

Today, Kotaku.com is questioning how in the world did other gaming sites post reviews of 'Little Big Planet' so early. This question came up citing the game's difficulty and online server problems which could prevent an entirely accurate review. It's an interesting read, especially Kotaku's direct questions to the major review sites... READ IT HERE.

Not only do I have the higher Force Unleashed gamerscore, but I actually nailed the "Worst Day-Shift Manager Ever" achievement in the first level for killing 12 Stormtroopers while playing as Vader.

Still, I wasn't as big of an a*hole as that Jeff Vader character:

'Space Invaders Extreme' is not what you think

Posted by Doug

spaceinvaders.jpg'Space Invaders' is 30+ years old. Seriously? I remember playing it when it was brand new. I also remember wasting countless quarters playing it at the skating rink arcade. The invaders' rhythmic marching thump was practically the soundtrack of every game palace in the '80's.

As iconic as the 'Space Invaders' game is in the whole history of gaming, it's not the most intriguing concept to re-hash for modern systems. Luckily, Square-Enix and Taito have really pumped fresh-blood in the aging slide and shoot title.

I picked up the DS version of the the game (for $19!) this weekend, and I was really blown away. This little game is awesome.

While the gameplay core remains the same... move back and forth and shoot down spaceships... the developers have thrown in a dash of visual and music flare obviously inspired by the likes of Sega's 'Rez' and Q3's 'Lumines.' The backgrounds are swirling kaleidoscopes of images and colors. The music is beat-heavy and is complemented by the notes created from shooting down the individual space crabs.

The bad guys are no longer single color marching bots, now the invaders come in multiple colors. Shooting combos of similar color enemies, produces power-ups which makes clearing an attack armada much easier (and more satisfying). Shooting down combos of combos opens up bonus rounds and crazy fever-jackpot/roulette sequences to earn more points and in-game goodies.

The game's chaotic gameplay is part of it's appeal. This is not your 1980's 'Space Invaders.' Oh, and the game sometimes encompasses both DS screens, so your eyes will get a workout along with your thumb (mine is still sore).

In addition to the single player arcade mode, ranked modes (which save you scores online) and level modes (complete a level and you can return to that level) there is also a fantastic multiplayer mode downloads to two DS systems from one cartridge.

This game would have been a fantastic buy for $39, but it's a steal for $19. Go get it, now!

I've added a video clip to show you this game in motion:

'Guitar Hero: Aerosmith' - is this DLC at full-game price?

Posted by Doug
12:22 PM, July 1, 2008

gha.jpgI have a certain affinity towards rock legends Aerosmith... I'm not a hug fan, but they do have a whole roller coaster based around the band at Disney World's Hollywood Studios in Florida and France. That's just cool. And it's completely awesome to go 60MPH through loop-the-loops with "Sweet Emotion" blaring in your coaster car. But, I digress.

Besides a theme park attraction, the group now lays claim to their own 'Guitar Hero' game. I'm sure this is the beginning of a trend. I'm not sure what bands will next get this royal treatment but, I'm really hoping to see a U2 version of the 'GH' game soon.

Essentially this band-focused title is a re-working of 'Guitar Hero III.' Some might argue that this should be downloadable content for the original game and not a full-priced title. I think there was much more development behind this game than is first noticeable. From the documentary clips included on the disc, it's evident that Aerosmith re-recorded several classic music tracks just to use in the game and there was a ton of motion capture and scanning work that went in to creating all the new in-game characters.

The game plays exactly the same as 'GHIII,' but with only one boss battle... that, being with Joe Perry. This was a little disappointing since the previous title had three boss showdowns throughout the single player game. I was able to crank through the game on medium level (I hear you snickering... shut-up, out there!) in around three hours and the ramp-up to hard difficulty was almost impossible for me. By the way, I was playing the Xbox 360 version, because, you know, achievement points!

It's interesting to note that the song selection is not all from Aerosmith, there's a lot of other fantastic tunes in the game. Some border on sublime. Playing along RUN DMC's "King of Rock" is one the greatest game experiences I've had in the last year... DMC is even an unlockable character. Awesome.

I didn't have a clue about half of the Aerosmith songs. Where is "Just Push Play?" Where is that goofy song from "Armageddon?" What the hell is "Kings and Queens?"

You know, after creating a gigantic music library in my copy of 'Rock Band,' the number of songs in this title seems kind of puny. There's just a little over 30 tunes. Oh, and you can't use anything you've previously downloaded for 'GHIII'... genius programming guys, NOT (that was my Aerosmith, Wayne's World reference).

I have a couple of minor gripes with the game. The scrolling fretboard of some guitars in the game totally destroys my eyes. I'm horribly colorblind and it's hard to see the notes in the mix of goofy neck-graphics. I wish there was a way to turn them off... I was praying for "Star Power" opportunities so I could see the dots! Also, the on-stage 3-D animated amorous farm trucks (from the cover of the band's "Pump" album), were ridiculously irritating... I giggled once, but then wanted them to go away, forever.

Now, back to the price. I think $60 bucks is about $10 too much for this game. I would have been much happier with a $49.99 or $39.99 price point which I think the game deserves. I also think this 'GH' would sell twice as many copies with a lower price, but time will tell. Losing that little extra bit of moolah didn't prevent me from having a lot of fun with the game... it's still a blast. I just wish the game hadn't lost some of the boss battles, songs and DLC of the prior 'GH.'

One additional note, Target has a special box set of the game for the Wii with TWO guitars... kind of cool!

Comments

Ah, yes... Aerosmith's pre-"Get A Grip" era was the best. I saw them perform at what was then called the Starplex Amphitheater for their Permanent Vacation tour. Pretty much a gateway for my personal collection. Kings and Queens is a great song, but Aerosmith has much better songs in their earlier recordings. "Toys in the Attic" and "Rocks" are two of their best.

With that being said, this game sounds like one only worth renting from Gamefly.

'Guitar Hero on Tour' first impressions

Posted by Doug
4:37 PM, June 23, 2008

ghotedit.jpg

This weekend, in my tiny abode, it was all about 'Metal Gear' and 'Guitar Hero on Tour.' It WAS NOT about 'GRID' the race-car title, because I don't think I'll ever get a copy of that game... I think some secret organization is preventing me from ever obtaining a copy. I'll update the blog daily to let everyone know if some miracle occurs with THAT racing game. Maybe I'll get a copy "by next Monday."

Anyway, back to 'Guitar Hero on Tour' for the Nintendo DS, or as I like to call it "my little ticket to hand surgery." I don't think I can recall a game that, in my mind, I was more certain was going to be "good" than this one. I was dead-set to pick it up at the store the second it hit the shelves. Then I forgot the release date. As I walked in to the big blue box store to waste some time, I saw it on display, front-and-center. I bought it... no research, no quest for opinions, no nothing... a total impulse buy. I just bought it and took it home and started playing.

It's good! Hand-crampingly good. Thank goodness.

What I like:
• The strumming pick control is very cool... feels even better than the console version's strum bar.
• No Doubt is on the track-list.
• It's so portable.
• It sounds great... shockingly great.
• The controller is a cool fit with the DS. It's very responsive AND it works with older DS models.
• It's crazy fun to have a portable 'Guitar Hero' game that plays great.
• Expect difficultly is pretty darn hard.

What I don't like:
• My little finger has a hard time reaching the blue button.
• The controller seems to easily slip out of the DS's cartridge slot with the slightest nudge.
• There are only 25 songs.
• It's hard to lay in bed and play, you really have to relax your arm downward.
• Long games hurt my arm and wrist.
• The unlockable song at the end of each arena needs to be a massive hit... not Daughtry!

The funniest thing I noticed while playing 'GHoT' is that during the duration of a song... the harder it got, the closer my face would get to the screen and the more twisted my arm/wrist position would become. At one point my nose hit the screen. The dual images are a little weird.

If you have a DS and are a casual fan of 'Guitar Hero,' I think you'll be all over this game. It's a blast.

I want to see what a REAL 'GH' expert (MELCOLM???) thinks of the games difficulty and song choices.

Anyone else?

'Metal Gear Solid 4' makes me happy to own a PS3

Posted by Doug
11:11 AM, June 19, 2008

OK, why can't any other developers make PS3 games as fantastic as MGS4?

With awesome live support, achievements, easy-as-pie online updates and my huge friend list, it's hard to tear myself away from the Xbox 360, but MGS4 has totally captivated me.

I think the graphics in this latest episode of the MGS series are stunning and the gameplay is spot-on.

And speaking of gameplay, there's something for everyone here. I was a little guilt-ridden by taking advantage of cool weapons the game offers up... I mean, c'mon, it's a MGS game and I figure I'm supposed to be using stealth techniques. But, the game dumped so many cool weapons in my lap, I just couldn't resist the temptation to start blasting everyone. I've gotten over my guilt.

I'm only a few hours into the game (a co-worker spent 60+ hours beating the game on Big Boss level) and it's been a bewildering but enjoyable ride.

Get ready for baffling cutscenes, insane action, stealthy stalking, goofy bathroom humor and gaming greatness. If you have a PS3, get this game now. If you don't have a PS3, find 460 bucks and get this game and a system now.

What are your thoughts? Are you enjoying MGS4?

Comments

Well, if anything could persuade me to tear me away from a 360 and pick up a PS3, it would be MGS4.

  'GRID' demo is mighty impressive

Posted by Doug
3:46 PM, May 15, 2008

grid3.jpg'GRID,' Codemasters' follow up to the fantastic rally racer 'DiRT,' appeared in demo-form on Xbox Live a few days ago (the game will be release on the 360, PS3 and Windows). I was totally caught off guard with this title... I only learned of 'GRID' back in April, so I had no idea what to expect.

From the press-release, here's the gist of the game: GRID embraces all types of racing, including traditional circuit courses in exotics in Europe, muscle car street races in the US, and drifting import tuners in Japan.

Here's the heads up: you haven't tried the demo, start your download now... this game looks like it's going to be amazing.

grid2.jpg'GRID's' graphics are some of the best I've ever seen on any console. I guess the look reminds me, a little, of the recent 'Need for Speed' series games with muted tones and gritty track locations. Remarkably, the menus and text are like nothing you've ever seen before... the presentation is high-tech and stylish. The cars continue the visual goodness with a trio of nice test vehicles from BMW, Nissan and Ford... the rides look picture-perfect.

And, once the cars are set in motion, the whole thing takes on a hyper-realistic look with motion-blur, camera shakes and some insane damage modeling. It's almost overwhelming. 'GRID' is a nice departure from games like 'Gran Turismo' and 'Burnout.' Finally: a top-notch racer with photo-real graphics and "brand-name" cars that you can actually wreck.

grid1.jpgThe controls in the 'GRID' demo game take a little practice, especially for those of use accustomed to the slam-and-go driving in 'GTA IV.' I had to re-learn the art of easing the throttle up and down instead of mashing the controller triggers to death. After a few races I had it down. It's not hyper-realistic like Sony's 'GT' series, but it's not overly-arcade-like either. The controls feature a nice balance between simulation and fun.

The demo provides a nice mix of racing styles including track and street courses; but the drifting is divine. Not since the Japanese PS2 releases in the 'Kaido Battle' series have I been so captivated by a drifting game. It takes a ton of practice, but it's a smoking good time while perfecting your drift technique. So cool!

I could gush over this game for hours, but I will wait for the full release in early June. With more cars to unlock, more tracks to race and a very cool online multiplayer mode, there is a lot to look forward to with 'GRID.'

  Preview: Metal Gear Online beta

Posted by Victor Godinez

mgo.jpg

I think MGO has promise, but the complicated registration process (really, Konami, do we need to have two accounts before we can play?) is a big turnoff.

Konami promises they're working on streamlining the registration before the game is complete.

Also, I mention in the preview that I couldn't figure out how to play as Snake.

Konami was helpful enough to send me the solution to my quandary:

It is actually possible to play as Snake in MGO. It's a certain game mode where one person takes on the role of Snake (with all of Snake's cool tricks, such as OctoCamo and the Metal Gear Mk II), and everyone else tries to hunt him down. Snake gets points for killing people on the map, and everyone else gets points for killing Snake. So it's this back and forth of trying to hunt Snake while trying to help your team. Seems to be a very popular game type.

First Thoughts: 'Grand Theft Auto IV' (Xbox 360)

Posted by Doug
12:00 PM, April 29, 2008

gta1.jpgAfter nearly seven years of doing punchbutton, I'm still not worthy enough to receive a review copy of most games (except from D3... they ROCK)! That being said, I stayed up late last night to snag my collectors' edition 'GTA IV' at midnight from the local GameStop.

I played for 2 hours.

First thoughts: I love this game. It's everything I hoped it would be and more. The graphics look better than I thought they would, the city is staggering in size and the story line has been engrossing.

Here's what else I think in a bullet list:

• The opening title sequence is awesome. It's part cut-scene, part Hollywood movie opening. The graphic designer in me was doing backflips.

• Concerned parents are going to have a heart attack over this game. This is one of the most "M" rated games I can remember. The first couple of hours offer many adults-only surprises including a flash of a fairly risque scene, countless curse words, overt sexual harassment and ability for the player to drive drunk. I was giggling at most of these, but I DO NOT condone them. Giggle.

gta2.jpg• The music is fantastic. There are 18 radio stations to listen to while driving through Liberty City. Techno, Funk, Jazz, Rock, whatever... it's all there with some great new songs and great classic tunes, too. Nitzer Ebb is there! I can't believe Nitzer Ebb is in this game!

• The bowling mini game is OK. I'm dying to know why the mini-golf and go-kart track fences are wide open... are those mini games for later?

• I found a glitch! In the first car chase mission, the warehouse below your target has some weird alternate universe of disappearing boxes and a pitch-black void where Niko can vanish and reappear. Weirdness.

• On my first date with Michelle, she just left me her car. I wrecked it.

• Also on my date with Michelle, I accidentally fell into the pond at the mini-golf course. I climbed out and turned around, Michelle was standing neck-deep in the pond staring back at me. Hilarious.

• I want the amusement park to be open (it's closed for the winter)!

• Someone on the beach, next to the boardwalk, said something quite shocking to me. I won't repeat it.

• The car physics are awesome. All the vehicles feel heavier and more realistic than before. You can't just use gas and steering, you have to use the brakes a LOT. Also, gently bumping a pedestrian can produce some extremely realistic results... you don't knock them down, but you can knock things out of their hands or knock the hats of their heads.

gta3.jpg• I hate my cousin (in the game).

• Liberty City is crazy gigantic. Seriously, it's almost daunting to think where the next 38-plus hours will take me in the game.

• Niko walks down stairs with a sideways twitch... just like a real person. A real person with a leg problem.

• My in-game stats show that I've already racked-up a 56-foot free fall. This occurred when I fell from a warehouse into the river. Oh, and then I swam for 50 seconds (also in my stats).

• I predict that 'GTA IV's' in-game stats will be as addictive as achievement points.

So there you have it. If I had more sleep I would have had more to discuss. But that's all I can remember.

I will remember to take the day off next time a 'GTA' game is released.
