Why is developer Rockstar focusing on a racing game with real celebrity death locations? Oh yeah, it's Rockstar! (Come to think of it, no one has died at The Standard have they?)

'Ratchet and Clank' downloadable game this month!

Posted by Doug
1:31 PM, August 1, 2008

ratchet0801.jpgAccording to the Official PlayStation Blog "Ratchet & Clank Future: Quest For Booty will be available for download on the PlayStation Network Store on August 21st for $14.99." Great news for PS3 owners and 'R&C' fans!

The Entry goes on to say:

As for the gameplay, Q4B focuses heavily on exploration and platforming, along with some of new experimental action for the franchise. For example, Ratchet will use the new kinetic tether on his Wrench to manipulate the environment, and he'll use elements such as light and shadows to his advantage.

I, for one, am anxious to see how I can handle DOWNLOADING an A-list title. I love having a physical copy of a game... it's why I bought the store version of 'Gran Turismo: Prologue.' Let's see how this goes...

2:01 PM, July 15, 2008

Here's a few of the big announcements at E3 in quick bullet-list form:

Xbox 360 announcements:

xboxex.jpg• New Xbox interface coming this Fall. Gone are the blades, now we get a weird combination of the PS3's interface (animated icons) and Wii's Mii generator (Microsoft calls them "avatars"). See it in action here.

• Lots of games announced for Xbox 360 including the much-rumored 'Lips' karaoke game. 'Guitar Hero 4' and 'Rock Band 2'... now with Metallica (zzzzz). 'Halo Wars', 'Gears of War 2', 'Viva Piñata: Trouble in Paradise', 'Fable 2', 'Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts', 'Resident Evil 5' and 'Too Human' were some of the other games shown (we already knew they were coming out)

• 'You're in the Movies' uses the Xbox 360 camera to make fools of your party guests. Looks half-way funny... the jury is still out on this one.

• Downloadable content for 'Grand Theft Auto IV' coming this Fall.

• 'Portal: Still Alive' for Xbox Live Arcade coming this Fall with new levels and achievements.

• 'Geometry Wars 2' will be available on Xbox Live Arcade next month (YEA!).

• 'Galaga Legions' from the same team that made the awesome 'Pac Man CE' will be out on the Arcade soon. It looks totally cool.

• 'Final Fantasy XII' will be available on the 360 as well as three other Square/Enix games. Kinda cool.

• Simultaneous online movie watching is coming to the 360 via Netflix. You and an online friend can watch the same movie at the same time and talk to each other.

• Check all the official Xbox announcements: HERE and HERE.

• More 'Guitar Hero' content for the DS is set to be released with the ability to trade songs... hmmmmmm.

• 'Wii Music' is announced with the ability for gamers to play 50+ instruments on their Wii... without the need of anything more that the standard Wii controllers. It will be out this year. See it in action HERE

Well this E3 was actually a snooze fest and probably the most shocking news was that FF XIII is no longer a PS3 exclusive. I think this will probably start the end of "exclusive" console games.

PS3 2.4.1 firmware update is here to save the day

Posted by Doug
5:21 PM, July 8, 2008

By the time you read this, the 2.4.1 firmware update for the PS3 should be available.

This will hopefully unbrick some of the unlucky consoles that downloaded 2.4.0.

According to Kotaku, looks like some consoles might not be so lucky... a trip to the repair center may be necessary.

Here's the official PlayStation blog with the announcement.

2.40 firmware for the PS3 is out now... some user problems reported HAS BEEN PULLED!

Posted by Doug
2:57 PM, July 2, 2008

UPDATE!!!: According to KOTAKU, Sony has pulled the 2.40 update. Sony is only saying they "are looking into it."

Original post:

The much anticipated firmware update for the PS3 is out. This is the one that lets you earn in-game trophies (similar to Xbox 360's achievements) and allows you to access the XMB (cross media bar) in game).

I downloaded and installed it with no problems or hic-ups.

Others are not so lucky. Several threads of problems (and solutions) have been posted to the official PlayStation message boards: HERE.

Have you updated your PS3? Any problems? Let us know!

(NASDAQ: ERTS), are taking the groundbreaking music platform that forever changed the face of music video games to the next level this September with the release of Rock Band 2. With the original providing millions of players a new way to interact with the music and artists they love, Rock Band 2 is the next evolution of the franchise that redefined the standard for music games.

Rock Band is the groundbreaking platform that allows music fans and gamers to interact with music like never before - challenging players to put together a band and tour for fame and fortune while learning to master lead/bass guitar, drums and vocals.

Rock Band 2 builds upon its foundation as the first music game to introduce co-operative band gameplay, multiple instruments, a robust online multiplayer experience, an unrivaled offering of downloadable content and raises the bar by delivering an entirely new level of depth, connectivity, authenticity and features including:

Backwards compatibility with Rock Band downloadable music content. All previously purchased tracks will immediately load into your Rock Band 2 song list. No need to re-purchase or re-download.

"As successful as the original Rock Band continues to be, we've now had the benefit of the last eight months to listen to our fans' requests and to build upon that foundation," said Alex Rigopulos, co-founder and CEO of Harmonix. "Rock Band 2 is a second-generation band game that will elevate the music game experience to the next level."

Rock Band 2 will make its debut on Xbox 360™ video game and entertainment system from Microsoft this September and have an exclusive launch window in North America. Rock Band 2 will be available for additional platforms later this year.

"We expect Rock Band 2 to continue to drive an amazing social music experience on Xbox 360, said David Hufford, senior director, Xbox Product Management for the Interactive Entertainment Business, Microsoft... "We look forward to supporting Rock Band 2 on Xbox 360 as gamers continue to download hundreds of new music tracks from Xbox LIVE so they and their friends can perform the rock music they love most."

More details regarding features and music for Rock Band 2 will be revealed at the 2008 E3 Media & Business Summit. Rock Band, the first installment in the franchise, garnered more than 40 awards including Game Critics Award: Best of Show E3 2007.

In addition, Harmonix and MTV Games today announced that The Rock Band online music store recently surpassed 15 million paid downloads since the game's launch in late November 2007. With more than 200 tracks available to date via download purchase (complete list of tracks at http://www.rockband.com/dlc), the massive Rock Band Music Store allows players to preview and purchase downloadable individual music tracks, packs and albums from the vast selection of offerings available as they build their own custom Rock Band library.

Rock Band 2 is rated "T" for Teen (lyrics, mild suggestive themes) by the ESRB.

A new week of bankruptcy! A flood of new releases is coming!

Posted by Doug
5:17 PM, June 2, 2008

Wow, there's a ton of cool games releasing this week.

It's time to start seeking (legal) alternate income methods just to keep up:

• 'Lego Indiana Jones' for just about everything.
• 'Robert Ludlum's: The Bourne Conspiracy' for PS3 and Xbox 360
• 'Ninja Gaiden 2' for Xbox 360
• 'Grid' for PS3 and Xbox 360
• 'Incredible Hulk' for everything
• 'Cabela's Trophy Bucks' for Wii

But don't close your wallet yet, cuz the next week brings:

• 'Metal Gear Solid 4' for PS3
• 'Nascar '09' for everything
• 'Dragon Ball Z: Burst Limit' for PS3 and Xbox 360

Sheesh! I can't remember a grouping of Spring releases like this in the past. Finally game companies are taking Summer-time gamers seriously.

Behind the scenes at Nerve Software, maker of Enemy Territory: Quake Wars for Xbox 360

Posted by Victor Godinez
2:13 PM, May 27, 2008

I went out to Nerve's offices in Richardson on Friday to visit with them before the launch today of their latest game, Enemy Territory: Quake Wars for the Xbox 360.

I talked with them about how they make games and what it's like to see your creation on store shelves after two years of planning, designing and programming.

Check it out.

I've also posted the official launch-day press release after the break.
