'Guitar Hero: Aerosmith' - is this DLC at full-game price?

gha.jpgI have a certain affinity towards rock legends Aerosmith... I'm not a hug fan, but they do have a whole roller coaster based around the band at Disney World's Hollywood Studios in Florida and France. That's just cool. And it's completely awesome to go 60MPH through loop-the-loops with "Sweet Emotion" blaring in your coaster car. But, I digress.

Besides a theme park attraction, the group now lays claim to their own 'Guitar Hero' game. I'm sure this is the beginning of a trend. I'm not sure what bands will next get this royal treatment but, I'm really hoping to see a U2 version of the 'GH' game soon.

Essentially this band-focused title is a re-working of 'Guitar Hero III.' Some might argue that this should be downloadable content for the original game and not a full-priced title. I think there was much more development behind this game than is first noticeable. From the documentary clips included on the disc, it's evident that Aerosmith re-recorded several classic music tracks just to use in the game and there was a ton of motion capture and scanning work that went in to creating all the new in-game characters.

The game plays exactly the same as 'GHIII,' but with only one boss battle... that, being with Joe Perry. This was a little disappointing since the previous title had three boss showdowns throughout the single player game. I was able to crank through the game on medium level (I hear you snickering... shut-up, out there!) in around three hours and the ramp-up to hard difficulty was almost impossible for me. By the way, I was playing the Xbox 360 version, because, you know, achievement points!

It's interesting to note that the song selection is not all from Aerosmith, there's a lot of other fantastic tunes in the game. Some border on sublime. Playing along RUN DMC's "King of Rock" is one the greatest game experiences I've had in the last year... DMC is even an unlockable character. Awesome.

I didn't have a clue about half of the Aerosmith songs. Where is "Just Push Play?" Where is that goofy song from "Armageddon?" What the hell is "Kings and Queens?"

You know, after creating a gigantic music library in my copy of 'Rock Band,' the number of songs in this title seems kind of puny. There's just a little over 30 tunes. Oh, and you can't use anything you've previously downloaded for 'GHIII'... genius programming guys, NOT (that was my Aerosmith, Wayne's World reference).

I have a couple of minor gripes with the game. The scrolling fretboard of some guitars in the game totally destroys my eyes. I'm horribly colorblind and it's hard to see the notes in the mix of goofy neck-graphics. I wish there was a way to turn them off... I was praying for "Star Power" opportunities so I could see the dots! Also, the on-stage 3-D animated amorous farm trucks (from the cover of the band's "Pump" album), were ridiculously irritating... I giggled once, but then wanted them to go away, forever.

Now, back to the price. I think $60 bucks is about $10 too much for this game. I would have been much happier with a $49.99 or $39.99 price point which I think the game deserves. I also think this 'GH' would sell twice as many copies with a lower price, but time will tell. Losing that little extra bit of moolah didn't prevent me from having a lot of fun with the game... it's still a blast. I just wish the game hadn't lost some of the boss battles, songs and DLC of the prior 'GH.'

One additional note, Target has a special box set of the game for the Wii with TWO guitars... kind of cool!

Ah, yes... Aerosmith's pre-"Get A Grip" era was the best. I saw them perform at what was then called the Starplex Amphitheater for their Permanent Vacation tour. Pretty much a gateway for my personal collection. Kings and Queens is a great song, but Aerosmith has much better songs in their earlier recordings. "Toys in the Attic" and "Rocks" are two of their best.

With that being said, this game sounds like one only worth renting from Gamefly.

Xbox 360 announcement tomorrow? WiiWare starts today!

Microsoft is set to announce something, or some things, tomorrow.

Joystiq points out that something called 'Lips' and 'Ninja Blade' are in the schedule lineup to be announced at Microsoft Gamer's Day '08.

'Ninja Blade' sounds like a new game. 'Viva Pinata: Trouble in Paradise' and a new 'Scene It' game are also on the list.

What could 'Lips' be?

ALSO, WiiWare starts today. This is Nintendo's version of the Xbox Live Arcade. Instead of ports of older console games (like the Virtual Console), these are original games for the Wii that (hopefully) take advantage of the Wii-moste.

Launching today: Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles, LostWinds (which looks awesome!), Defend Your Castle, Pop, VIP Casino Blackjack, TV Show King. The launch games are priced from 500 to 1500 points.

Fellow DMN reporter Suzanne Marta has a post up at our Airline blog about how the Westin chain of hotels is beginning to install Wii consoles in its fitness rooms equipped with copies of Wii Fit.

Sounds more fun than the ancient Super Nintendo systems you still occasionally find in hotel rooms.

  Preview: Deca Sports

Here's my preview from Tuesday's paper of the upcoming Deca Sports for the Wii.

Like I said in the preview, this game has the potential to be as popular as Wii Sports, which I would bet is still by far the most played Wii title of all time.

Hudson, Deca Sports' publisher, may have some competition, though, to replace Wii Sports as the default title for many Wii owners, since I recently received a copy of Summer Sports: Paradise Island for the Wii.

I'm surprised it's taken so long for these mini-Olympics-type games to proliferate on the Wii, given the popularity of Wii Sports, but it sounds like developers are finally figuring out the Wii's strengths.

I saw this on Kotaku... it made me giggle.

I think the dealer would have a better response giving away Wii's with each car!

Oh well...

Will a recession derail the Wii?

Here's my column in the paper today, looking at whether a slow economy might cool casual gamers' interest in the Wii.

I also explain why I think the latest rumors of a Blu-ray equipped Xbox 360 are hogwash.

I blame France for the Wii shortage

Posted by Victor Godinez

Well, not really, but I wrote a follow-up column on the Wii shortage, and I highlighted some comments from an interview I did with game industry analyst Michael Pachter where he argued that the Wii shortage in the U.S. is due to the weak dollar and strong Euro.

Basically, Nintendo is shipping extra Wiis to Europe, because the strong Euro results in a bigger profit.

So at the bottom of the column, I made a joke about how you can blame the French for the Wii shortage.

Well, I got about half a dozen e-mails about that comment, including two from readers in Holland and one from a guy whose cousin in France sent him a copy of the column, and another from a reader in Canada, whose hackles were all in full OUTRAGE mode about my insult.

Hey, I'm just happy I've got an international fan club (well, a hate club, anyway).

UPDATE: Woot! I earned a Kotaku post! Where's the love for punchbutton, though?

  Review: Super Smash Bros. Brawl

I gave the game a "B", which I know sounds like a harsh score compared to most reviews.

But I think a lot of critics are glossing over numerous technical flaws in this game out of their sheer love for all things Nintendo.

Look, I get that. As a former Sega Genesis owner (and one of the three Sega Master System owners worldwide, before that), I understand allegiance to beloved games and characters and franchises.

I still remember Streets of Rage and Golden Axe and even Altered Beast with fondness out of all proportion to the actual quality of those titles.

But that doesn't mean a critic can surrender their responsibility to honest judgment.

The fact is that SSBB has pedestrian graphics even for the Wii, is difficult to control with the Wii remote, has a clumsy online mode, and a boring singleplayer campaign.

Now, my criticism won't matter a whit when it comes to sales. SSBB will surely be one of the best selling games of 2008. And a lot of gamers will have a blast with the multiplayer mode for a long time.

But this notion that SSBB is a perfect game is absurd.

UPDATE: Anyone outraged by my review (Hi bob! Hi Collin!) might want to check this out.

FROM VICTOR: Well, I did name Wii Sports my Game of the Year for 2006, but yeah, I'm just a hater.

no your a (Edited by Doug) dumb-(Edited by Doug)...who the (Edited by Doug) do you think you are. Have you even played Brawl? Oh I'm sorry that microsoft only makes games that are exactly the same as gears of war or Call Of Duty. Sony makes better games than microsoft. Microsoft should just make computers..but they can barley do that. You live in dallas. What do you know about technology. Im sure there are some (Edited by Doug) working where you work. Your pathetic. You are a hater. you having a sege master system doesnt mean (Edited by Doug). doenst mean you know everything about games. your a looser. really you are. comment me back when you beat subspace and get all of the characters..then tell me how overrated brawl is. Oh and by the way. I got brawl on opening night 12:00! I beat subspace emissary in less than half a day AND i have about 62 percent of the game complete (trophies and stickers). I even stayed home from school. WHY??? because its a great game that is worthy. I dont care who you are you will have fun playing this game..people will love it..and they already do love it...but of course you probably wont since you have the sega master system..(wish i had one)

FROM VICTOR: Who do I need to be? I wasn't aware only Nintendo fanboys are allowed to review Nintendo games.

Seriously awesome. I'm going to try this myself this week, and I'll create a video of my own results.

And Nintendo, by the way, should be embarrassed that this guy beat them to the punch so badly.
